Localist Athens was as a college assignment for my Entrepreneurial Journalism class that evolved into a personal project. I created the site to promote the collaboration and appreciation of independently owned businesses, which I'd always had a soft spot for. I built and designed the website on WordPress and created social media counterparts, including a Twitter account that gained more than 200 followers.
I interviewed local business owners about what kind of content they would find most helpful, created business profiles and wrote and designed blog posts offering information and stories on the local community. I also collaborated with another local blog, Townie Travels on holiday gift guide posts and even met with another Athens business, The Local Notion, to collaborate on locally minded entrepreneurial ideas.
I put together this Storify presentation on remediated journalism for my Writing for the Web class. This research project examines digital journalism and media in relation to more traditional modes of communication.
